Gisborne Riverbank & Town Beach Walkway

Every town has a walk that locals take when they need fresh air, exercise, a coffee excuse, or simply somewhere to think.
In Gisborne, that walk is the Riverbank & Town Beach Walkway.
It's not a wilderness adventure. There are no mountain peaks, suspension bridges, or warning signs about surviving the next 48 hours. What it does offer is something arguably better: an easy, scenic stroll that showcases the rivers, beaches and relaxed lifestyle that make Gisborne feel distinctly different from most New Zealand towns.
Where Is It?
The walkway follows sections of the Taruheru and Tūranganui Rivers before connecting with the beachfront pathways around Waikanae and Midway Beach. The main route stretches roughly 2.5 kilometres and can be walked comfortably in under an hour.
You can start almost anywhere.
Some people begin along the Taruheru River near Grey Street. Others join from the city centre, while beach lovers often start at Midway and work their way back toward town.
Multiple access points mean you can make the walk as long or short as your enthusiasm allows.
Three Rivers, One City
One thing visitors quickly notice is that Gisborne is a city built around water.
The walkway follows the edge of the Taruheru River, which eventually joins the Waimatā River before flowing into the Pacific Ocean as the Tūranganui River. Gisborne is sometimes called the "City of Rivers", and nowhere is that more obvious than along this route.
You'll pass rowing crews gliding across the water, paddleboarders testing their balance, fishermen trying their luck and the occasional duck that appears to own the place.
The ducks may be right.
The Best People-Watching Walk in Gisborne
The scenery is great, but the real entertainment is often the people.
On any given day you'll encounter:
The answer may be this walkway.
When the River Meets the Sea

As the path approaches the town beaches, the atmosphere changes.
The river views gradually give way to open coastline, salty air and the sound of waves rolling onto the shore. The transition from urban riverbank to beachfront boardwalk is surprisingly seamless and gives the walk a sense of variety that many city paths lack.
On calm mornings the water can look almost glass-like.
On windy days you'll quickly discover why Gisborne residents own more hoodies than fashion magazines recommend.
Perfect for Families
One reason the walkway remains so popular is its simplicity.
The route is mostly flat, easy to navigate and suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. Much of the path is accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, bicycles and prams, making it one of the most inclusive outdoor experiences in the city.
You don't need special gear.
You don't need a map.
You don't even need a plan.
Just start walking.
A Different Experience Every Time
The beauty of the Riverbank & Town Beach Walkway isn't found in one dramatic viewpoint.
It's found in the changing light, the movement of the water and the small details that make Gisborne feel like Gisborne.
Sunrise walkers see the city slowly waking up.
Midday walkers enjoy river reflections and beach activity.
Evening walkers often catch golden light bouncing off the water while the sun begins its slow descent toward the horizon.
No two walks ever look quite the same.
Local Tip
Grab a coffee before you start and take your time.
This isn't a walk designed to be conquered.
It's a walk designed to be enjoyed.
And if you find yourself stopping every few hundred metres to admire the view, watch the river traffic or pretend you're exercising harder than you actually are, congratulations.
You're experiencing the Riverbank & Town Beach Walkway exactly like a local.
