Another day in paradise on the Motu Trails, Gisborne NZ

Motu Trails is not one trail. It is more like a polite invitation from Gisborne to see how honest your fitness tracker really is.

From town, riders can choose easy coastal paths, sealed country roads, hill circuits, mountain bike tracks and longer adventure routes that connect into the wider Motu Trails network. Gisborne offers everything from a flat coastal ride beside Waikanae Beach to the eastern end of the Rere Falls Trail, with hill country and fertile plains close by.

That is the beauty of it. You do not need to be a lycra-clad mountain goat to enjoy it. But if you are one, Gisborne has options for you too.

Start Easy: The Gisborne Coast Ride

For visitors, the easiest place to begin is the Gisborne coastal ride.

From the city, you can ride towards the coast, follow shared-use paths near the river, continue along Waikanae Beach on the Oneroa cycle and walkway, then carry on toward Centennial Marine Drive and the Waipaoa River mouth. It is flat, panoramic and forgiving, which is exactly what many of us want from a bike ride before coffee.

This is the Gisborne lifestyle in motion: beach, river, open sky, sea air, and enough scenery to distract you from the fact that cycling still involves legs.

For Something More Serious: Matokitoki Circuit

The Matokitoki Circuit is where Gisborne gently stops being polite.

This 18 km loop includes sealed roads, a gravel climb, a short track section and a steep drop into Matokitoki Valley Road before returning toward town. It is described as diverse and pretty, which is cycling language for “beautiful, but you may have a word with yourself halfway up.”

It is a good choice for riders who want more than a cruise but less than an existential crisis.

Mountain Biking Close to Town

One of Gisborne’s great advantages is how quickly you can get from town to actual trails.

Whataupoko Mountain Bike Park, also known as Fox Street, is close to the city centre and maintained by the Gisborne Mountain Bike Club. It offers a compact network of well-signed single-track trails ranging from grade 2 to grade 5.

In practical terms, that means beginners can have a go, experienced riders can find something more interesting, and everyone can pretend they chose the correct grade on purpose.

The Bigger Adventure: Rere Falls Trail

For riders looking beyond a short spin, Gisborne also connects into the eastern end of the Rere Falls Trail. This is where the experience becomes more than a local ride and starts to feel like a proper journey through the landscape.

Think rural roads, open country, waterfalls, longer distances and the satisfying feeling of doing something more memorable than scrolling through restaurant reviews.

Although, to be clear, restaurant reviews are still useful after the ride.

Guided or Self-Guided

If you would rather not spend your holiday muttering at maps, guided and self-guided tours are available through Cycle Gisborne. Motu Trails notes that these options suit all fitness levels and range from short rides to multi-day experiences.

This is especially useful if you are visiting Gisborne and want the good bits without accidentally discovering the bad bits, such as taking a wrong turn, running out of water, or confidently cycling in the wrong direction for 40 minutes.

Why It Belongs on a Gisborne Itinerary

Motu Trails gives visitors a different way to understand Gisborne.

Not from a car window. Not from a lookout. Not from a brochure written by someone who used the word “hidden gem” six times before breakfast.

On a bike, Gisborne opens up differently. You notice the rivers, the scale of the plains, the curve of the coast, the way the hills sit close behind town, and the easy rhythm of the place.

It is active, but not overpackaged. Scenic, but not staged. Local, but accessible.

That is very Gisborne.

Local Tip

Start with the coastal ride if you are unsure. It is flat, scenic and gives you a good introduction without requiring heroic personal branding.

For stronger riders, add Matokitoki or Whataupoko Mountain Bike Park. For the full adventure, plan around Rere Falls Trail and talk to local operators before heading out.

And yes, check trail conditions first. Gisborne weather and rural routes do not always care about your itinerary.

Motu Trails is one of the best ways to experience the Gisborne vibe outside the usual beach-and-café routine.

It gives you coastline, hills, river views, local tracks, open country and just enough effort to make dinner feel deserved.

Which, in Gisborne, is important.

Because after a day on the bike, you are not just hungry.

You are locally, scenically, morally hungry.
