Okitu Beach, Gisborne NZ

There are beaches in Gisborne that feel lively, social, and woven into the rhythm of everyday city life.

Then there is Okitu Beach.

A little further east beyond Wainui, the atmosphere changes. The houses thin out. The traffic disappears. The coastline opens up into something quieter, windier, and more expansive. Okitu feels less like a destination designed for visitors and more like a place people slowly drift toward when they want space, calm, and perspective.

This is one of the beaches locals often hesitate to talk about too loudly.

Not because it is secret. But because part of its appeal is how unspoiled it still feels.

Where Is Okitu Beach?

Okitu Beach sits on the eastern edge of Gisborne, beyond Wainui Beach and close to the beginning of the coastal road leading toward Makorori and further north.

It is only a short drive from central Gisborne, but psychologically it feels much further away.

The city fades quickly here.

The beach stretches wide and long beneath dramatic hills, with changing light, rolling surf, and a coastline that can feel almost cinematic in the right conditions. Early mornings are especially striking. The first sunlight in New Zealand reaches this coastline with a kind of softness that feels unique to Gisborne.

What Makes Okitu Different?

Okitu is not heavily commercialised.

There are no rows of cafes facing the sand. No dense retail strip. No attempt to turn the coastline into a polished tourism product.

That restraint is exactly why many people love it.

The beach feels raw in the best possible way. The landscape still dominates the human presence rather than the other way around.

You notice:

  • the wind moving across the dunes

  • surfers checking the conditions in silence

  • long walks without crowds

  • changing tides and shifting colours

  • the sound of the ocean without traffic noise underneath it

There is a spaciousness here that is increasingly rare.

Surfing At Okitu Beach

Like much of Gisborne’s coastline, Okitu attracts surfers year-round.

Conditions vary depending on swell and wind, but the beach often offers consistent surf with fewer crowds than more central areas. The atmosphere tends to feel relaxed rather than competitive.

Even if you do not surf, watching the lineup from the beach can become part of the experience itself.

Gisborne’s surf culture has always felt understated compared with larger surf destinations. Okitu captures that perfectly.

No performance.

Just people chasing good waves.

Walking & Beach Life

Okitu is ideal for long beach walks, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light softens across the coastline.

The beach never feels rushed.

People walk dogs, sit in parked cars watching the sea, or simply wander without urgency.

It is one of the better places in Gisborne to experience the slower rhythm that defines much of the region.

During summer, families spread out along the sand with plenty of room to themselves.

Even on warmer days, Okitu rarely feels overcrowded.

A Different Side Of Gisborne

Many first-time visitors to Gisborne spend most of their time around the city beaches or central attractions.

But places like Okitu reveal something deeper about the area.

This coastline is not trying to become Queenstown.

It is not trying to become Auckland.

It is not trying to impress people with scale or spectacle.

Its appeal is quieter than that.

Okitu represents the version of Gisborne that locals often value most:

space, light, ocean air, and the feeling that life can still move at a more human pace.
