Koco Boutique is the sort of shop that makes you stop halfway down Gladstone Road and remember you meant to buy a birthday present.

Twenty minutes later, you’re trying on a jacket and wondering whether your lounge needs a new lamp.

The Gisborne store sells women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, homewares and gifts, with enough choice to make “just a quick look” a risky promise.

On the fashion side, there are dresses, shirts, tops, pants, skirts, linen pieces, knitwear and jackets. You can build an outfit here, then find the shoes to go with it, from sneakers and loafers to sandals, heels and boots.

Bags, belts, scarves and jewellery take care of the finishing touches.

Koco’s collections include labels such as Loobies Story, Zoe Kratzmann, Humidity, Lolly’s Laundry and EOS.

Then there’s the other half of the shop. Koco stocks cushions, throws, mirrors, lamps, vases, artwork, candles and room fragrances, along with smaller gifts that are easier to carry home than a coffee table.

It’s a useful place to look when you want something for the house but haven’t quite worked out what.

City choice, Gisborne time

Koco is offers a shopping experience that helps give Gisborne a unique personality.

There’s a range here that would sit comfortably on an Auckland or Wellington shopping street.

The experience, though, feels more Gisborne: laid back, personal and in no particular hurry to move you along.

Owner Karen Sherriff started Koco as a pop-up in 2014 after drawing inspiration from independent boutiques in Sydney.

Her background in interior design and fashion colour consulting still shapes the store.

Koco has grown twice since those early days, moving into a larger Gisborne space in 2023 to make room for more fashion, homewares and gifts.

That means you can come in with a specific job, such as finding shoes for a wedding, or browse until something earns a place in your wardrobe.

The team offers styling and colour advice if you want it.

If you’d rather take your time and see what catches your eye, that works too.

The GisborneNZ Take

Have a look online before you go, then call into their shop in the CBD where a carpark will usually miraculously appear close by.

Give yourself longer than you think you need - That’s usually when you find the good stuff.
