Watch Gisborne Before You Arrive

If you’ve never been to Gisborne before, it can be difficult to understand what makes this place different.
On a map, Gisborne sits quietly on the eastern edge of New Zealand’s North Island. It is smaller than many visitor destinations and often overlooked by travellers rushing between larger centres.
Yet that is exactly part of its appeal.
Gisborne moves at its own pace.
The city is known as the first place in the world to see the sunrise each day, but visitors quickly discover there is far more to Gisborne than early mornings.
Long beaches, uncrowded surf breaks, boutique wineries, local cafés, farmers markets, coastal walks and a relaxed lifestyle combine to create a destination that feels distinctly different from much of New Zealand.
The short video below provides an excellent introduction to the city and many of the experiences that attract visitors throughout the year.
From the golden sands of Wainui Beach and Midway Beach to stingray encounters at Tatapouri, scenic walks at Kaiti Hill and the region’s growing food and wine scene, the video captures many of the experiences that define a Gisborne visit.
What it cannot fully capture is the atmosphere.
Gisborne is a place where people still stop to talk, where parking is rarely a problem, where surfers check the waves before work and where some visitors arrive for a weekend and find themselves planning a return trip before they leave.
Whether you are visiting for a few days or considering a longer stay, this video is a great starting point.
After watching, explore our guides to Gisborne’s beaches, local attractions, food scene, accommodation options and wellness experiences to start planning your own visit.
