Gisborne Weather
Gisborne,
located in the sunny east of the North Island, is New Zealand's
most eastern region, making it the first in the world to see the
sun each day. When the sun arrives it tends to stay! The Gisborne
region enjoys a Mediterranean.climate and is one of the sunniest
places in New Zealand.
The Māori name
for the region is Tairawhiti, which means 'the coast upon which
the sun shines across the water'.
Sheltered by
high country to the west, Gisborne enjoys a dry, sunny climate.
Warm dry settled weather predominates in summer. Typical summer
daytime maximum air temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C,
occasionally rising above 30°C.
High
temperatures are frequent in summer, which may be accompanied by
strong dry foehn winds from the northwest. Extreme temperatures as
high as as 38°C have been recorded and an average 65 days a year
have a maximum of over 24°C. Temperatures over summer average:
23°C and over winter average: 12°C.
Overall
Gisborne generally has warm summers and mild winters with a yearly
average of 2,200 sunshine hours.
The region's
annual rainfall varies from about 1000mm near the coast to over
2500mm in the higher inland country.
